You've gathered the children and the supplies and you've headed outside to learn something!
Hooray!
But what is it you're aiming to do?
Are you just bringing a lesson (or an activity for the parents at home) outside?
Great! That's exactly what I want you to do!
Taking the opportunity to get outside and learn is really important! The fresh air, the big space and the new location can help refocus a child on what you're doing with them.
But also, why are you just moving the activity outside?
It's lovely to sit outside and read a story or build a block tower or count how many cars you brought outside.
But have you thought about making a story out of the pictures in the clouds? Have you collected sticks to make a house for the toys?
Have you tried to measure a sunflower?
Bringing things outside to use in an activity is great, but have a look around you in your outdoor area and see if there's something you can use thats already here. Have a look to see if there's a space for you to grow something to use!
Let's use a sunflower, for example.
Just finding a spot to grow one is a lesson in itself! Use this opportunity to learn about the microclimate in your yard, the weather patterns in your town. Find out about germination and photosynthesis! Develop some principals of designs Nd engineering by making a garden bed, a trellis, a frame to support the sunflowers growth! Track its growth, plot it on a graph. Learn about graphs!
And you can do all of this before the flower even emerges!
Take a look, and then another look at the world around you and find the ways it can be the teacher, instead of you and all your resources!
